Processed on your computer
With the recommended setup, a downloaded speech model transcribes your meetings and Kimiko’s built-in AI writes summaries, suggests tasks and answers your questions, all on your Mac or PC. You don’t need an AI account for any of it.
Stored on your computer
Your notes, transcripts, summaries, tasks and chats live in an encrypted database on your computer. Its key is kept by your operating system: Keychain on Mac, Credential Manager on Windows. Your Kimiko account doesn’t upload or sync your meetings, and we don’t receive them.
Audio isn’t kept unless you ask
Kimiko transcribes the audio, then discards it. To keep recordings for a while, choose 7 or 30 days under Settings → Transcription → Keep session audio. Kept audio is encrypted on your computer and deleted when the period ends.
When something does leave your computer
- A cloud provider you choose. If you choose cloud speech (Deepgram or ElevenLabs) or cloud AI (such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or OpenRouter), the audio or text needed for that task goes from your computer to that provider, under your own account and its terms.
- A calendar you connect. Connecting Google Calendar or Microsoft Outlook lets Kimiko read your events, including attendees’ names and email addresses. To show their photos, Kimiko sends attendees’ email addresses to Google or Microsoft.
- Recordings you import from a link. When you import a recording from a link, the site it points to and its media servers receive the requests that fetch the audio. The first time, after you accept, Kimiko downloads a small open-source helper from GitHub.
- AI apps you allow. If you turn on Settings → Connections → Allow AI apps, AI apps on your computer can read your notes, meetings and tasks through MCP. It’s off until you do. An app may send what it reads to its own cloud service, under that app’s terms.
- Downloads, updates and your license. Model downloads, app updates, activation and subscription checks use the internet. They don’t include your meetings.
Want nothing else to connect? Turn on Settings → Privacy & data → Local-only mode. It blocks every connection outside your computer, including downloads, updates and license checks, while built-in AI keeps working. Download the models you need first.
Anonymous health signals are off by default
Kimiko can share anonymous health signals to help us fix problems, but only if you turn on Settings → Privacy & data → Share anonymous health signals. They never include your recordings, transcripts, notes, meeting titles, names, email addresses or prompts.
Your exports are files like any other
PDFs, Word documents, Markdown files and backups you create are ordinary files. Store and share them as carefully as any other document.
Recording other people
When it records, Kimiko captures what your computer hears. Let the people in your meetings know you’re taking notes, and follow the rules where you work.
