The short answer
Microsoft Copilot lives inside Microsoft 365. In Teams meetings it summarizes, answers questions and tracks tasks from Teams transcription, with no extra bot, and its data stays in your organization’s Microsoft 365 tenant. It needs a Copilot license on top of Microsoft 365 and works in Teams, apart from a Windows beta. Kimiko is a separate desktop app for any call app, and it transcribes and summarizes on your own computer.
Choose Kimiko if
- Your calls happen in Zoom, Google Meet and other apps, not only Teams.
- You want notes from meetings that other organizations host.
- You want meetings transcribed and summarized on your own computer.
- You need meetings processed offline once your models are downloaded.
- You don’t have a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, or don’t want one.
Choose Microsoft Copilot if
- Your organization runs on Microsoft 365 and meets in Teams.
- You want answers that draw on your email, chats and files as well as meetings.
- You want shared AI notes that everyone in the meeting can edit.
- Your IT team needs Purview retention, eDiscovery and the EU Data Boundary.

Where they differ
Teams, or any call app
Copilot works in Teams meetings and calls, including Teams meetings scheduled in Outlook, but not in meetings another organization hosts. Microsoft is testing Capture in Copilot Notebooks, which transcribes Zoom, Webex and Google Meet meetings on Windows, with Office Insiders Beta customers. In-person meetings work through Facilitator in the Teams phone app and in Teams Rooms.
Kimiko records your microphone and your computer’s audio, so it works with Zoom, Teams, Google Meet and other call apps on Mac and Windows, whoever hosts the meeting.
Where meetings are processed and kept
Copilot runs in Microsoft’s cloud and keeps transcripts and notes in your organization’s Microsoft 365 tenant, inside the EU Data Boundary for EU customers. Microsoft says it doesn’t train foundation models on your data. Admins can also allow Anthropic or OpenAI models; Microsoft notes that Anthropic’s models are currently outside the EU Data Boundary.
Kimiko runs local speech and AI models and keeps your library in an encrypted database on your computer. Meeting audio isn’t saved unless you choose to keep it.
Licenses and admins
Each Copilot user needs a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan, a Teams license and a Copilot license, and admins set the meeting policy. Teams Premium offers intelligent recap as another route.
Kimiko is a subscription for one person, with nothing for an admin to switch on. Your license works on up to three of your computers.

Questions
Does Copilot work in Zoom or Google Meet?
Copilot in Teams works in Teams meetings and calls. Microsoft is testing Capture in Copilot Notebooks, which transcribes Zoom, Webex and Google Meet meetings on Windows, with Office Insiders Beta customers. Kimiko records any call app on Mac and Windows.
Do I need a Copilot license for meeting recaps?
Yes. Each user needs a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan, a Teams license and a Copilot license; free Copilot Chat answers from the web only. Teams Premium also includes intelligent recap.
Does Copilot need the meeting to be transcribed?
By default, using Copilot after the meeting needs a saved transcript. Organizers can choose “Only during the meeting”, which uses temporary speech-to-text that isn’t saved. Kimiko transcribes on your computer and doesn’t save meeting audio unless you choose to.
Does Microsoft use my meetings to train AI?
Microsoft says prompts, responses and Microsoft 365 data, including meeting content, aren’t used to train its foundation models. Your Kimiko meetings stay on your computer.
Does Copilot work offline?
No. Copilot is a cloud service. Kimiko’s local models transcribe and summarize without internet once they’re downloaded.
